Prevailing Pink: Dress to Skirt Refashion

The tones of gray, pale turquoise and pink will prevail. – Christian Dior

A couple of years ago I decided that I needed to inject more color into my wardrobe. A few colors were conspicuously missing, one of them was pink.Christian Dior had a lot to say about color, dresses and fashion … like the quote above. I was given a cute color block dress that incorporated two of the three “prevailing” colors: Pink (a lot of it) and gray. It also features some black which doesn’t have to prevail apparently as a timeless color.

The dress was adorable, but I found I wasn’t wearing it much, opting instead for slightly longer dresses or ones with straps that didn’t feel like they needed pulled up constantly and would make me feel more comfortable overall. Like with anything in my closet that sits unworn for long periods of time, I considered if I want to eliminate it from my wardrobe or simply change it.

This dress had fantastic pockets. A rare find in female fashions. I determined that I would change it into a skirt in a few very minor adjustments. Continue reading

Have Pockets. Will Party. {Dress Refashion}

Not nearly enough women’s clothing is made with pockets. I’m tempted to purchase any dress or skirt that I try on if it has pockets… even if it doesn’t look that great on me.

“But women carry purses, they don’t need pockets in their clothing.”

False! There are plenty of times when carrying a purse with you doesn’t make sense or isn’t permitted. The struggle is real.

So what do you do with the bare necessities that you must carry? You improvise! Remember the time I created a utility garter for my diabetes supplies while I carried out Matron of Honor duties?

I’ve long thought about adding pockets to some of my favorite dresses but never got around to it until last week. Last Friday, I volunteered at my local JDRF chapter’s annual gala fundraiser. I worked on auction check in/out and entered donations and couldn’t really have my purse with me. They requested that volunteers dress in black, so I went to my closet and pulled out my favorite black skater dress. You may remember it from my blog post about our 5th wedding anniversary.

Zero pockets to be found

One problem, there’s nowhere to stash my phone so I can track my blood sugar. I thought about the garter, but it would need adjustments to fit a phone securely and it might be awkward to dig under my dress for it at this kind of event. So I decided to add pockets. Continue reading

Repairing by Embellishing {Sweater #Refashion}

I had a black cardigan that I’ve been wearing for years. It was the perfect weight, size and worked for casual, professional or whatever look I had. I even wore it to Luke’s.

But my versatile cardigan met with a bit of a mysterious mishap in the laundry. This is what it looked like after some stitching up. Continue reading

The Last Little Bit of Summer {Refashion}

Here’s a final summer refashion as the weather has been cooler and the days have become shorter.

… speaking of shorter. I’ve had two old pairs of pants sitting in the refashion basket for awhile.

Both pairs were at least a touch too long and had the backs walked off of them to a point that they were frayed.

The blue pants were snug fitting through the hips to the knees, then came out in a wide flare at the bottom. These I decided should be capris.

Have you noticed that it’s hard to find capri pants any more? I have, so these fit the bill pretty well.

The brown ones fit great in the hips and thighs, and were loose at the knees and quite wide at the ankles.

(Too) Little Blue Dress Refashion

Here’s a little shopping advice, never buy a dress without trying it on first… even if it is only $2.

I picked up this blue dress and was dismayed that it was too tight and too short.

I loved the color and I like the texture, just not the fit. Continue reading
