DIY Nautical Dec(k)orations

Brad and I are preparing to clean, fix and stain the deck on our new house, which inspired me to share a project from last summer that didn’t make it on the blog yet.

I can’t take credit for anything you’re about to see, all the credit goes to my crafty and talented mother-in-law. She has the cruise bug worse than anyone I know and is drawn to all things nautical. This is the woman who made a cruise-themed Christmas tree for their living room.

At the beginning of summer last year, she was anxiously anticipating an upcoming cruise so she decided to deck out their deck with some awesome handmade nautical items (please tell me someone else appreciates all the ways I can use “deck” in this post). I’ve linked to her inspiration with each item as well.

If the sea calls to you as well, prepare to be inspired! Continue reading

Throwback Thursday: Meet Sally

Last August I got Sally. She’s my dress form and she’s got great style…

She’s been a great addition to my refashioning, and if I you sew and ever have the opportunity to get such a steal on one of these, definitely do it!

There are tutorials for DIY dress forms on the internet that look great! I tried the Duct Tape Dress form and it turned into a disaster. Let me know if you’ve successfully made your own dress form!

Here’s the story of how I got her and the sweet lady who told me to name her!

A Scraptastic Headband

I love, love, love fabric scraps. Well, scraps in general actually including those that don’t fall into the “fabric” category like zipper pieces, ribbon, beads, etc.

Awhile ago, I tweaked this dress top that I got at Nordstrom Rack for $2. Yes, I got a clothing item at Nordstrom Rack for only two bucks! Even better, it was on the Rack’s clearance rack sandwiched between a top that was $79 and on that was $120… they were also on “clearance.”

I actually bought the top thinking it would be cute to wear with leggings and a sweater but decided it would be much better as a work-appropriate top and don’t worry, I’ll blog about it eventually.

Anyway… the tweaking left me with a couple of fabulous seam scraps.

I felt like having a little fun with my hair the other weekend, so I curled it and wrapped it up in a scraptastic headband.

These Boots Are Made for Singin’

Okay, so I probably butchered the titles of two songs with that blog post title. But let’s move right along… To another boot refashion! Continue reading

Blazer Refashion

I mentioned having developed an affinity for suits due to participating in high school speech in my post yesterday (thank you to everyone who shared kind words in the comments and on Facebook). I had this blazer hanging in my closest from back in the tournament days…

That picture is really bad… but it might be the last time I ever wore that jacket.

Sally just looks drab in this jacket
