Mantras and More: Count to 10

Today’s DBlog Week prompt is about mantras that get us through the tough diabetes days. I can’t say that I’ve ever really held onto mantras… or called them that. But there are things that I hold onto in tough times.

So what do I do when I’m having a particularly tough diabetes day?

Aside from a good dose of pouting, I try to not freak out. I’m good at panic, but panic raises my blood sugar and makes everything worse. My answer is a deep breath and mental count of 10. It’s calming. And calm is good.

Another thing that impacted my diabetes management that I hadn’t realized until recently was my dad’s advice about not wasting days. I don’t have terminal cancer as he did, but he would tell you that we’re all terminal.

“…he told me that if he didn’t have to go to work, he probably wouldn’t get out of bed some days. When he hurts he figures that he’s either going to hurt at work or hurt at home and at least at work he has a distraction. My dad hasn’t been given a time frame but as he says, “we’re all terminal.” He’s decided not to waste any days…”

This applies to diabetes because it’s easy to crawl into the full on pout and become a blood sugar zombie and just throw in the towel, but life needs to move on. Even if diabetes is screwing with me that day, it’s still a day that I’ve been blessed with so I shouldn’t waste it.

  1. this is a great way to stay positive. my fiance has type 1 diabetes and i know how rough it can be sometimes. when he’s having highs/lows and his insulin isn’t kicking in right away, i just try to keep him calm since we know stress makes it worse.
