Managing Diabetes At Work

It’s sad that I have to say this, but completely necessary… I’m not a medical professional, this post (and all others) are not medical advice. I’m simply about to share with you about my experiences managing diabetes at work.

I observed a diabetes chat where readers submitted questions for a doctor and two people from diabetes nonprofits to answer. Someone asked for advice on managing diabetes at work because it is harder for them to manage at work than at home. I know there are no dumb questions when you’re trying to learn, but I couldn’t suppress my reflexive thought of well that’s a dumb question, just do it like you do at home. 

But after some self-scolding, I realized that for some it’s not so easy. To my relief one of the panelists said that management at work or school should be like management at home. Of course, I agree.

Making your health a priority can be tough for people, but the bottom line is that you need to do it. Your health and well being is important, both to you and your employer.

Me at work with my diabetes

I manage my type 1 diabetes at work exactly how I do at home, in this manner:

  • My diabetes bag is within arm’s reach
  • I check my blood sugar regularly and I check my Dexcom frequently
  • I eat when I need to
  • I bring my own healthy food to work (as opposed to going out)
  • I stay hydrated
  • I count carbs
  • I stop what I’m doing when diabetes must be handled

Sure there are extra hurdles to doing this at work instead of in the privacy of my own home, but you’ve got to do it. Continue reading

Defining a “D-Parent”

D-Moms and D-Dads are the parents of a person with diabetes… but I think the definition is a little more narrow, at least for me personally.

I got thinking about this when I read the article on Diabetes Mine about the Miss Manners situation and how her son has type 1 diabetes. Here’s the article.  (This post is NOT commentary on this article or the situation, just what got my brain churning.)

Mike’s a great writer and I enjoy reading his articles, but I raised an eyebrow when he called Judith Martin a “D-Mom” after I found out her son, Nick, was diagnosed with Type 1 in his 20s.  It’s not my place to judge the impact of diabetes on another family, but as someone who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in my 20s (22 to be exact), I would not call or consider my mom a D-Mom. I was contacted by the American Recall Center and asked to share one thing that I want people to know about living with diabetes.

Everyone with diabetes has a different story, different treatment and there is no one-size fits all approach to diabetes treatment. Even with just Type 1, there are different types of insulin, some people use injections, some people use pumps and even then our meters, pumps and other equipment vary. We have different targets and have different insulin needs. For example, at breakfast I need 1 unit of insulin for every 9 grams of carbs that I eat (which is different from lunch, which is different from dinner for me) and another blogger with type 1 needs 1 unit of insulin for every 20 grams of carbs she eats.

So back to my contribution… I couldn’t pick just one thing and I couldn’t narrow it down to one sentence, so I gave them several thoughts and let them do the editing based on their other input. They made an excellent selection by using: Continue reading

The Reel Story

Otherwise known as my conflict over mowing the lawn.

A Real Reel

When we bought our house we opted for a reel lawn mower over the traditional gas-powered mower or a quieter electric mower. The reel mower isn’t your grandfather’s lawn mower (in my case, grandmother’s), it’s made by Fiskers and is the definition of environmentally friendly and neighborly (completely silent! I could mow at 6am and no one would care except for me.).

It takes a fair amount of effort to use though… it’s actually a really good workout… legs, arms and core if you do it right.

I got home early one evening last week and decided to mow the lawn (not my normal chore) and set to work. I enjoyed mowing the lawn. But here’s the problem… Continue reading
